Mark Monroe, Director of Sustainable Computing at Sun, talks about green products and services in this podcast. About halfway in, Mark discusses power management software, and the need to start thinking about things like whether an email server really needs to be operating at full capacity 24X7. Another interesting thread is about customer awareness of the cost of energy versus the cost of equipment:

Is the message getting through to customers that the cost of the electricity over the life of the server is gonna come darn close to the cost of the server? People nod their heads when we give that message. But I don’t think emotionally they understand it yet… there still is a big disconnect between capital expense and operating expense budgets.

If energy costs continue to rise (and this is likely), I would guess that this “disconnect” will be rectified to enable better accountability of who’s using how much throughout the organization and better align financial incentives.
