Two recent reports make a pretty strong case for why IT and IT leadership will be key to the greening of companies.

The first, by the Economist Intelligence Unit Managing the company’s carbon footprint: The emerging role of ICT highlights telework, video-conferencing, supply chains, and the CIO as a change agent. Surprise: The report is sponsored by AT&T and Cisco.

The second is by IDC: IT for Green: A Call to Action for the CIO.

As CIO, you have an unique opportunity to get in front of this sea change with “IT for green”. Specifically, we see the following need for the CIO’s involvement:
If you can’t measure it, you can’t manage it
Information is essential to knowing what to change
Sustainability requires a cross-company perspective
Sustainability requires a value chain perspective
Supporting sustainability will require IT
IT supports executing for change
There’s business risk in climate change
