IT uses just a few percentage points of all electricity in industry.

But IT can impact the other 98%, as I discuss in this blog.

In Moving Beyond the 2% Solution, Doug Neal calls this Green Hygiene versus Green Business. I like these terms. Hygiene is good. Business is better. Doug links the need for innovative information systems to tackle environmental problems to the use of twitter and other technologies to promote ideation within corporate green teams. Nice.

  1. Excellent presentation and an eye opener. Thanks for posting it Prof. Melville.

    Coming from a month long trip to India, can’t help but wonder:
    1) How can the Base of the Pyramid (BOP)internalize these concepts?
    2) Is this conversation tranferable to/intended for, the BOP segment?
    3) Does someone have a breakup of how much the BOP pollutes versus the TOP (top of the Pyramid)?
