Why wait for a “smart meter” (however you frame that phrase) when solutions are available now (at least for whole-house energy measurement). Though backlogged, the TED 5000 is now compatible with Google PowerMeter. For $199, there’s no included display hardware, just software to communicate with Google (and storage for 90 days of hourly data if, like me, there’s a laptop in play that’s not home most of the time). For $40 more bucks, a display is included.
