Companies sometimes report GHG reduction objectives for specific areas. For example, LG Electronics has set a goal of a 100,000 tons C02e reduction in product manufacturing (could be Scope 1 or Scope 2) and 6 million tons reduction in product use (Scope 3) (appears to be on an annual basis). While this approach may work for comparing firms within industries, it makes it difficult to compare firms across industries. Reporting by standard protocols, such as Scope 1, 2, 3, enables such comparison.
Back to LG. Apparently, they are the first firm in Korea doing real-time C02e management:
LG Electronics is the first company in Korea to implement a system to monitor its carbon gas emissions relative to its goals in real time. It also uses a CCMS (corporate carbon management system) and plans to increase IT investment. By relying on third parties for independent verification, LG has ensured its campaign to strengthen its energy efficiency is transparent, reliable and as inexpensive as possible. [more]
Not sure what sort of CMS it uses, whether it’s developed in-house or purchased, and what functionality it provides. It will be interesting to chart their emission reduction progress as well as their IT strategy for doing so in the coming quarters.
